Last 16 of February 2021, the students of Mutiara Harapan Islamic School once again virtually gathered together  to conclude the month-long celebration of STEAM Fair. The Grade 3 students showcased their project for the STEAM Fair event with the theme “Promoting Excellence and Innovation About the World Around us”. With one question in mind ” What are the Uses of Plants?”,  students explored the answer to  this question  by coming up with a project of their own interest.

Some of them showcased different experiments with plants. Others explored with their creative talents through poster making. As a source of food, students showcased different food recipes as well as food art. Some students think that plants can also be used as alternative medicines. Hence, they worked in coming up with essential oils as well as recipes for a healthy lifestyle. Upon looking around the house, they also realized that plants from woody stems are used for house constructions and other home furnitures so they came up with an idea of constructing their own house model made from popsicle sticks. Others also concluded that plants are source of oxygen which is very important for us to live in which gave way to a garden project to beautify the surroundings while appreciating the role of the plants in our survival.

The students were very happy with their projects. These projects gave them the sense of ownership as they were the ones who chose the project to implement. This pandemic did not stop the students from yearning to learn. Instead, it served as an eye opener for them to be more appreciative of other things instead of limiting their capabilities due to new normal situation. Collaboration among other students may be a challenge, but it somehow gave them the window of an opportunity to work with their loved ones at home, thus building camaraderie among family members.
